She likes her tablemates; it’s just that Jennifer needs quiet and solitude to do her best thinking. Without an office door to close, she’s stressed, overwhelmed, and seriously thinking of moving on. Open Space Office or Free For All? In the past 20 years, open space offices became the hot trend. Supporters claim that they increase collaboration, break down barriers between employees, and cost less than individual offices. Detractors say that the open space is too noisy, decreases employee satisfaction, and can even increase absenteeism by allowing the office cold virus to spread unchecked. If you’re an introvert, they can be doubly difficult. Working from home depends on company policy and your home situation. Do it too much and you sacrifice the positives of being in the office. What can you do? Learn the office ebb and flow Have you experienced that moment in a restaurant or party when everything goes quiet? Or those times in the coffee shop when everyone suddenly starts speaking loudly? It happens in offices too. Listen for a few days and notice times of day that naturally become more or less noisy in your workplace. Book time with yourself to concentrate during the naturally quiet times. Schedule meetings during the louder ones. Take a bubble break Most open space offices incorporate small, sound-insulated rooms that let employees get away from the noise. Called glass boxes, pods, phone booths, or bubbles, the best ones have curtains or solid walls, noise insulation, and best of all, a door that closes. Use them when you need to focus, or just need some peace and quiet. I call it a bubble break: 15 minutes of solitude that lets me refocus, escape interruptions and recharge. If you’re using pod retreats to relieve stress or soothe your inner introvert, try a 5-minute stress-relieving meditation. Block out noise Noise cancelling headphones or earplugs can be life-savers in open spaces. Get some that fit comfortably and wear them. When you put them on, tell your tablemates if it’s OK to interrupt you. It may feel a bit strange at first; stick with it, you will get used to it and so will your colleagues. You might even start a trend! You might not get to choose whether to work in an office space, but you can choose how you work in it. If it’s not your natural habitat, take heart. A few simple steps can put you back in control.

However, we curious cats cant help it, we want to know where we stand among our peers. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) run the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings every year. The data below is based on a random sample of 1 per cent of all the workers who carry out occupations, using PAYE tax records from 2015 to 2016. Heres the top ten highest paying jobs in the United Kingdom. Time to reconsider our career options, we think: The highest paying jobs in the UK [table 6 not found /] Looks like the surest way to a high paying job is to become an aircraft pilot or a flight engineer. Average salaries clock in at £84,968 per year. We say this because the job title chief executive or senior official, although first in the ranking at £85,285, is pretty vague. We dont even know which industry theyve taken the sample from. Coming in third is air traffic controllers ( £80,043 per year), transport associate professionals ( £75,524) and marketing and sales directors ( £70,787). Interestingly, this list is in sharp contrast to recent research published by LinkedIn, looking at the highest paying jobs in America. According to their list, nine out of ten of the top paying jobs in the US are in the medical industry. Cardiologists in America get a whopping $356,000 per year and are ranked first on their list. This is followed by radiologists, anesthesiologists, surgeons and medical directors. Whoa. However, in contrast to the United Kingdom, medical professionals dont even show up in the top ten highest paying jobs. Huh. Perhaps thats food for thought for anyone thinking of studying medicine abroad. Our advice? There are many ways to find jobs and carve out your career path. 4 vacations in 3 weeks - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Im back from a 3 week trip to the US and the Bahamas, and with all the stuff we managed to cram into the trip, it feels like weve been gone for 3 months. No kidding. One reason is probably, is that we had 4 distinctly different sections of the trip. They were: 1: 2 days in Manhattan. 2 days is about as much Manhattan as I can take in one go, and after that we were all New Yorked out. We walked all over midtown, saw two Broadway shows, found a great cheap Sushi place of Bleecker and happened by chance to be on Times Square as they were announcing Michael Jacksons innocence. As for the Broadway shows: Slavas Snow Show is a wonderful, poetic, funny, touching clown show with some great special effects in a theatre just off Union Sqaure. See it if you get a chance! 2: The Bahamas We flew down on JetBlue for only 99$ a person. Amazing! I attended Roosevelt Finlaysons conference on Festival in the workplace, and Patricia lazed by the pool (a divison of labour that suits us perfectly). The conference rocked and I met some very interesting people there, including Peter Block, the author of two of my favourite books: The answer to how is yes and Freedom and accountability at work. 3: Washington DC Visiting a city is so much nicer, when you know somebody there, and I have the great fortune of having a friend in DC. Traci Fenton lives in a wonderful house on 14th street a few miles outside central DC, and let us stay in the guest room for as long as we wanted. Traci is putting together a conference on democratic organizations in october at which I will speak, and seeing her plans for the event I just know it will be great. We also went tubing on a lake in Manassas and did DC as tourists. 4: Touring I want you to imagine a Roller Coaster that goes like this: You accelerate from 0 to a 190 Kph horizontally in 4 seconds. You go 130 meters straight up. You go over the top and then go 130 meters straight down. The you break, the entire ride having lasted 22 seconds. Thats Top Thrill Dragster, and we did it. 3 times. It rawks! For the last week we rented a car which turned out to be a Ford Mustang niiiiice. We started by driving down to Williamsburg and seeing Busch Gardens there which was OK. Then we drove to Cedar Point in Ohio and that seriously rocks. They have some of the tallest and fastest roller coasters on earth, including Top Thrill Dragster. All I can say is, that the extra wait to sit in the front row is totally worth it. We also drove around Pennsylvania and New Jersey for a couple of days, and I startled the people in a small bookstore in Andover NJ by buying 23 business books. Its great to be getting back into gear in Copenhagen and enjoying the quiet summertime in the Happy at work project, before we hit what I just know will be a very busy and exciting autumn.
