The key mistake at the base of the Google anti-diversity manifesto

The key mistake at the base of the Google anti-diversity manifestoThe key mistake at the base of the Google anti-diversity manifestoUPDATE 940pm, 8/7/17 Google has fired an employee who wrote an internal memo blasting the companys diversity policies. Identified in press reports as engineer James Damore, the man confirmed his dismissal in an email to Bloomberg, saying he had been fired for perpetuating gender stereotypes. Googles Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai told employees on Monday that parts of the anti-diversity memo violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace. Pichais statement, however, made no mention of action against the employee.READ MORE Google engineer fired for anti-diversity manifesto says he may sueA male Google software engineers internal memo about Googles workplace diversity initiatives was made public this weekend, stirring a heated debate that has reverberated across Silicon Valley.Titled Googles I deological Echo Chamber, the 10-page manifesto was first reported by Motherboard and fully obtained by Gizmodo. In it, the unnamed engineer said he believes women are underrepresented in tech because men and women biologically differ in many ways. According to the author, these genetic differences include that women have a lower stress tolerance and want more work-life balance, while men are born with a higher drive for status. He neglects to mention any of theproven research on systemic stereotypes that hold women in tech back. The key mistake of the manifesto is the assumption that diversity initiatives make it so that companies are notlage hiring the best people. In reality, research shows that companies dont hire the best people until they strip away biases.Male engineer gender gap is due to biology, not sexismOne former senior Googler saidhe thought the manifesto should be grounds for firing. Other Googlers said that the beliefs stated in the document were not an outlier at the te ch company.Danielle Brown, Googles Vice President of Diversity, Integrity Governance, responded to the manifesto with an internal memo. In it, Brown said that people with alternate views should feel safe sharing their opinion, but the manifesto advanced incorrect assumptions about gender that Google did not want to encourage and endorse. This manifesto is the latest gendered controversy the tech giant has attracted in recent months. Google is currently being investigated by the Department of Labor for what the U.S. government says is anextreme gender pay gap.Research debunks anti-diversity manifestoThe main assumption behind the engineers essay is that racial and gender diversity initiatives lower the bar at Google because they prevent the company from only letting in the most qualified candidates. This goes against decades of research that have proven that diversity, in fact, raises the bar to success at work. Multiple research studies have found that diverse teams outperform homoge neous ones because they make fewer factual errors, process outside perspectives more carefully, and are more innovative. As facebook inc COO Sheryl Sandberg has said about the issue, Endless data show that diverse teams make better decisions. We are building products that people with very diverse backgrounds use, and I think we all want our company makeup to reflect the makeup of the people who use our products. The unnamed engineer also disparaged gender and racial mentoring programs, such as code camps, as discriminatory practices that are just veiled left ideology. But he included no evidence to back up his claims. There is, however, evidence that shows the benefits of mentorship programs for underrepresented groups.A 2017 study found that mentorship programs that taught women to see what they could become kept more women in engineering. In this study, female engineering students who had a fellow female engineering student as a peer mentor became more motivated and confident and wer e less likely to drop out of their engineering courses.Science has also proven, time and again, that unconscious biases against women holdback careers - not inherent biological difference. One study found that men judge womens competence at workbased on the color of their hair.Having a female name can also hold women back. A 2015 study found that online teachers who identified as a female would be rated lower by students in their evaluations than instructors who identified as male - just on their name alone.Shoes can also make a difference. The Boston Symphony noticed that women were not being hired in blind auditions because the jury was being influenced by the sound of the womens heels. After the Boston Symphony introduced carpet to muffle the sound of shoes, more women were hired. After other top U.S. orchestras copied this use of blind auditions in the 1970s and 1980s, women in U.S. orchestras increased from 6% in 1970 to 21% in 1993.As for men having an inherent drive for stat us? Thats been debunked, too.Women may be just as ambitious as men at work, but they face challenges with salary that make achieving status harder. Right into their first jobs, women make less than men.The Pew Research Center found that millennial women make less money and achieve slower career progress than men despite equal resume qualifications and job choices. On average, women earn79 cents to every mans dollar. When they do negotiate their salaries and refuse to disclose what they currently make, they receive lower final offers. And contrary to the manifestos suggestion that women are more motivated to seek work-life balance, research has shown that everyone benefits economically and socially with flexible work arrangements. To assume that female technology workers are women first and workers second, as this engineer has done, perpetuates a negative view about womens commitment to work and their worth as tech employees.

One of the great things about people with  ADD  is that they often have a “big picture approach” to learning and understanding. Interest in a broad variety of topics is a requirement and an asset. A fast-paced environment seems to be an ideal career for those with  ADD. This could include outside sales or even certain technical fields. Besides types of professions, studies have also shown that  ADD  people often flourish in owning and managing their own businesses. Seeing the big picture opens up growth and opportunities others may pass by. People excel in their occupations when they are passionate about what they are doing. No matter who you are, you will love your job if it is something you not only enjoy, but that requires the  blossoming  of your inner talents in order to succeed. We all want stretch positions and people with ADD are no different. Having  ADD can actually be a great asset when searching for that perfect career you have the capacity to study a broad range of jobs quickly and attack your job search with zeal. It is important, however, to plan your career around your own personality so that you can play to your strengths and overcome your weaknesses.

How to invest your money in a few simple steps

How to invest your money in a few simple steps How to invest your money in a few simple steps You have a great job and make a good income. You’ve paid off your student loans and credit card debt. Now you’re ready to save and invest. But you’re not sure  how to invest your money.  I have good news.I’m going to introduce you to six basic steps on how to start investing your money. It will be unlike many of the other “how to” articles on investing. Before you think about investing a dime, we need to set the foundation. Without it, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to have a successful investment strategy.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!I’ll list the steps first and then get into some detail to help you navigate each one.Six steps: How to invest your money Work from your budget Determine how much you can save The best accounts to start â€" taxable vs. tax-deferred Find the best investment options Diversify Monitor and rebalance Now let’s get into the details for each to get you started.Principles to build wealthPersonal finance principles are not complicated. Executing them takes practice and discipline. If you want  to build wealth, you will need to do these three things: Spend less than you make Save and invest the difference Reduce or eliminate debt These are common sense things. Living within our means, being disciplined about saving and investing and minimizing debt will allow us to build wealth over time. There are no get rich quick schemes that work. There are no short cuts. Doing these three things over a long period will give you the best opportunity to build wealth. Here’s where to start.1. Investing for beginners â€" start with a budgetI know, I know.  Talking about budgets  is about as much fun as having a root canal. But if you don’t know where your money is going it will be difficult to determine how to invest your money. I’m not suggesting you need to be slaves to your budget. Quite the contrary. But you need to know where your money is going every month to know to analyze areas where you might be able to reduce expenses and increase the amount available to save and invest. Many people use spreadsheets to budget. If you’re not a spreadsheet person, consider some of the budgeting apps available.  Mint.com  and   You Need a Budget (YNAB) are two of the most popular. Both programs allow you to connect your bank accounts to pull expenses into the app. You can then set up categories to better manage where cash is going. If you’ve been disciplined enough to pay off your debt it’s likely you have some budgeting mechanism set up. If not, these two apps can help you get started.2. Determine how much you can saveYour budget tells you how much you can save and invest. That’s the foundation that must be in place to assure you can contribute a consistent amount to  grow your wealth.Increase incomeIf you want to save and invest more money, increasing your income means you have more to save and invest. If you’re working in a corporate job, look for ways to get promoted. Learn the art of negotiation when asking for raises. Become more valuable by working harder and doing more than what’s asked of you.Look for ways to gain income outside of work. Find  a side hustle  or part-time work that has fle xible hours and can bring in more money. The more money you make, the more you can save and invest.Emergency fundIf money for an emergency fund is not part of your budget, it needs to be. What’s an emergency fund? It’s money you keep in a liquid (risk-free, penalty free) account that you can access at any time. Use this money to pay cash for unexpected expenses. If your car breaks down, you have an unexpected medical bill or any other expense, don’t pay for these on a credit card. Use cash from the emergency fund. The emergency fund should have a minimum of three to six months of monthly expenses in it. So, if your monthly expenses are $1,500, you would keep from $4,500 (3 months) to $9,000 (6 months) in the account. If expenses are $2,000, you’d keep $6,000 or $12,000 in it.Some people keep one or more years of expenses in their emergency fund. Whatever amount you choose, be sure not to compromise that number. Financing unexpected expenses on a credit card will put you right back into the hole you just dug out of.After the emergency fund is in place, look at what’s left over in your budget. The money to invest will come from money left after bills are paid and your emergency fund is full. If that amount is zero (it shouldn’t be), then it’s time to look at where you can cut some costs. Since you’ve had the discipline to pay off debt, it’s likely you’ll have a good sum of money for investment.3. Investing for retirement â€" choose the right type of accountIf you’re thinking about how to invest your money, look at retirement accounts first. Remember, this is after you’ve set your budget, created your emergency fund and determined how much you can invest each month. If you have a career, it’s highly likely that your company offers its employees a retirement plan. These go under different names â€" 401(k), 403(b), etc. The plans offer a way for employees to contribute money every paycheck to an investment account where the money invested gr ows tax-free as long as it remains in the plan.Company match = free moneyIn most cases, the employer contributes money to your account as well in the form of a  matching contribution. They agree to match what you put into your account with their own money up to a certain percentage. Here’s a common example. They offer to match your contribution up to 50% of the first 6%. For every six dollars that you invest, you’re getting three dollars more from the company. That’s a 50% return on the first 6% you put into the plan. There is no other investment out there that offers a 50% guaranteed return.Plus the money you contribute is tax-deductible, meaning it reduces your taxable income by that amount. You pay tax on the money at the time you withdraw it at retirement It’s free money and a tax deduction. It’s truly the best investment you can make. The IRS allows you to contribute up to $19,000 of your own money into employer-sponsored plans. That means you can put a chunk money towa rd saving for your retirement. This article originally appeared on Melissa Blevins. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

First Vice President in Finance Role Overview

First Vice President in Finance Role Overview First Vice President in Finance Role Overview In much of the financial services industry, with the proliferation of vice presidents, variations on this job title have been created to denote higher-ranking Vice Presidents. Job titles and the conventions that surround them can vary widely between firms, especially in the security and banking industries. In fact, some firms may not offer a First Vice President title at all. But traditionally, First Vice President - also called a First VP or FVP - is one of these, typically seen in brokerage, securities, and investment banking firms. A First Vice President usually supervises a small but especially important group of other employees. The  First VP may be a recognition title that comes as a result of a promotion in place  rather than pursuant to a promotion into a higher rung on the firm’s management ladder. Other firms may place the position higher or lower in their management hierarchies than their peers in the industry, relative to other variations on the VP title. Equivalence Between Jobs Recognition titles are not necessarily linked to your place in your firm’s hierarchy, peers in the organizational chart may have titles of varying prestige. For example, a divisional controller in a matrix reporting relationship with the corporate CFO (solid line) and divisional head (dotted line) probably will have his or her recognition title determined by the corporate CFO. Meanwhile, his or her peers within the division, consisting of various business unit heads, will have titles set by the divisional head. Thus, you may have a case where, for instance, the divisional CFO bears a First VP title, while those peers who are business unit chiefs will have loftier Senior VP titles. Demotions While policies may differ among firms, normally once someone has been granted a particular recognition title, he or she will retain it even after suffering a demotion. In an actual case, a divisional CFO had serious running disagreements with the corporate CFO, which caused him to fall from favor and be replaced. Held in high regard by the divisional head with whom he had a dotted line reporting relationship as divisional CFO, he had to accept a job one rung below. He became a product manager reporting to one of the business unit heads who formerly was one of his peers, while he was divisional CFO. He retained his First VP title, however, which actually was more appropriate to his new position than to his former post. In a footnote to this case, the corporate CFO was obsessed with management reporting formats and colorful graphics. The divisional CFO was not, being more concerned with the accuracy and relevancy of the data presented therein. When the corporate CFO insisted on including misleading and ill-thought statistics in his reports, and was not sharp enough to grasp the clear, cogent arguments against them that his subordinate offered, this became a cause of great frustration for the latter and led to a very strained relationship that ended in his ouster.

4 Resolutions for a Better Job

4 Resolutions for a Better Job 4 Resolutions for a Better Job You may be reading this thinking “hey, Simply Hired, it’s barely Fall, what gives with the resolutions.”  Sure, pumpkin spiced everything hit the shelves in August and we’re pretty sure we saw elves suiting up to decorate trees at the local hardware store, but it’s our article that caught you unawares? The truth of the matter is that there’s no time like the present to start resolving to up your employment game.  In fact, with many hiring processes taking 90 days or more, now is the best time to start planning for a career switch or upgrade in 2019.  We’re not talking general resolutions to “get better” or “try harder”. Those generic wishful-thinking type goals are about as useful to actually meeting your goals as a holiday candy blowout on January 2nd.   For real change and success with your career, candidates should consider setting concrete goals and deadlines and identifying action items that will make a real difference in the coming year.  If we can color you intrigued, keep on reading for four solid resolutions for finding a better job, today or in the new year. 1) Lose Weight Now before you start hounding on the whole “but I thought you weren’t going to talk about those goals” bandwagon, hear us out.  Whether after a festive drink and food-filled holiday season or to kick off a job search at any time of the year, starting a new routine to help shed and tone is a great idea for career success.  It’s been proven that a regular exercise routine boosts mood and cognitive function as well as giving you a healthy dose of extra energy. All of these qualities will serve you well when it comes time to buckle down and search for a new gig. In addition to the physical weight, you may also want to give the metaphorical a good ole kick to the curb.  Take inventory on habits that may be excessive in your daily routine and take up unnecessary amounts of your time.  Give your resume a thorough review as well and throw away outdated experience or other info that may weigh you down.  Make room for relevant experience for a lighter, fresher new professional you. 2) Save More Yeah, yeah, yeah, we hear you.  We’ve given you two goals so far that seem to be very un job search related.  But never fear; at Simply Hired we always have your best interests in mind. Saving up a few dollars now can give you a huge confidence boost when it comes time to make a career shift.  Having a decent savings account allows you the mental, and monetary, space to feel free to make a career shift for love and not for money. In addition, if you suspect layoffs or have dire needs to leave without job security, tightening those purse strings can help with stability while you search out a new gig. Need something to do with your time instead of spending it on fancy dinners out?  Why not pick up an online certification course or community college program that’s relevant to advancing your career?  Not only will you save money, but you’ll likely also end up earning more from the additions to your professional skill set. 3) Drop Bad Habits Before you start rolling your eyes, you should have learned by this point in the article to hear us out.  Whether personal or professional in nature, bad habits weigh on your ability to achieve and excel. In your personal life, consider streamlining your daily schedule and ditching things that cause you to procrastinate or put off looking for that new job of your dreams. When it comes to professional habits, many of us often don’t realize that we’ve picked up a few poor practices on our way to career success.  Try cleaning out your inbox daily or weekly and consider adopting an office to-do list. Check in with your team often to ensure you and they are on task and pretty soon you’ll have a reputation for being a go-getter and an employee that any company would be lucky to have on staff. 4) Volunteer More Last but not least, when it comes to resolutions few can match the impact that giving back can have on a person’s mental and career health.  From a personal perspective, volunteering your time towards a good cause is often a large confidence booster and can help develop focus and purpose.  Try giving a small portion of your time to a local not for profit and you’ll experience a large boost in mood and appreciation for what you currently have in your life. From a professional perspective, there are plenty of volunteer activities you can engage in that will not only allow you to feel good but will also reap career rewards.  If your alma mater has a counseling or mentorship program, consider signing yourself up to the list. Engaging with up and coming youngsters will not only stimulate new ideas and excitement, but it can often also lead to networking opportunities with other mentors in the program.  Last but not least, plenty of companies offer volunteer opportunities for their current staff. At these events, all levels of management often work together on a common task which improves overall morale and helps those above you on the corporate ladder see the positive qualities you are made up of. As you prep for the upcoming holidays and New Year celebrations, why not pencil in some time for early career resolutions.  Getting a head start on a new, professional, you,  is never a waste of time. At the very least you’ll have a head start on eliminating debt, getting those six pack abs and giving back way before the rest of the pack.

7 Signs that Suggest You Should Step Away from Managing

7 Signs that Suggest You Should Step Away from Managing 7 Signs that Suggest You Should Step Away from Managing Not everyone is cut out to be a manager. Organizations can certainly do a better job of how they assess for leadership potential and decide who should be promoted to management positions. One of the most common mistakes made is to take the best engineer, salesperson, or accountant and promote that person to manager. Superstar employees don’t always make the best managers. Instead of evaluating individuals for their potential to develop as effective managers and leaders, they use the promotion as a form of reward. The outcome all too often is the loss of a great individual contributor and the creation of a poor manager.   People often accept management positions for the wrong reasons. Before accepting a management position, it’s important to be sure that you have the right motivations, goals, and skills to become a successful manager. See: Should I Become a Manager? Management Doesn't Have to Be a Forever Role However, I’ve seen plenty of managers that were promoted for all of the right reasons and were initially very successful in their management roles. They enthusiastically took management courses, read all of the hottest management books, and thrived on leading and developing people. Then, for one reason or another, they “derailed”. Employees no longer wanted to work for them, their reputation as a manager grew tarnished, and they ended up stuck in a job they no longer enjoyed. In fact, they were miserable. They were burned out on being a manager. These managers might have been more satisfied and productive if they knew when it was time to step away from management  and look for an individual contributor role that better leveraged their strengths and interests. Their employees would have been better off too. Perhaps one of them could have stepped up and done a better job leading people, so the manager could have been blocking the advancement of promising high potential employees. 7 Signs that It is Time to Let Go of Your Role as a Manager: How do you know when it’s time to step aside, or down from being a manager? Here are 7 signs to look out for: Complacency and a lack of innovation. You haven’t tried or done anything new in a long time and are not interested in learning about new ideas. All new ideas sound like “flavor of the month” whims and would require too much effort and risk to implement. When your employees come to you with new ideas, you tend to “pop more balloons than you inflate.”  The status quo seems too comfortable for you. You stubbornly defend “the way we have always done things” and find yourself saying “we tried that before, and it didn’t work.” You stopped having team meetings and one-on-ones with your employees long ago. They just became too formal, too much of a bother, too messy, and always seemed to uncover complicated problems that you had to deal with. You have adopted the motto “no news is good news.” Dealing with people has become something that you find tiring. Your best days are the ones where you could stay in your office and work uninterrupted on your favorite project. You’re no longer interested in becoming a better manager/leader. Look at your bookshelf â€" when was the last time you read a management/leadership book? When was the last time you took a management/leadership courses? When you did, did you approach them with an open mind, or with cynicism? Do you find yourself more interested in learning about the latest technology in your field and less about leading people? Has your passion shifted from leading people to doing stuff yourself? No one is asking you to mentor them. Your high potential employees that are interested in management are flocking to other managers for advice and support. You are no longer asked to be a guest speaker at management training programs. These guest speaker opportunities are only for “role model” managers that organizations want aspiring managers to emulate. None of your employees are getting promoted. It may be because you’re no longer developing your employees. Your complacency is spreading to your team. The last time you were up for promotion you didn’t get the job because you were seen as “irreplaceable” in your current role. Your health is suffering. The stress of management is having a detrimental impact on your health. Your energy level is down, and you’re no longer happy. The Bottom Line It can be hard to step down from a management role. There may be a loss of status, power, and even a pay cut. However, it may be better to do an honest self-assessment and control your destiny instead of someone else doing it for you.

What Happens to My Resume After I Send It

What Happens to My Resume After I Send It What Happens to My Resume After I Send It What Happens to My Resume After I Send It Once you submit your resume and cover letter to an employer, it can feel as if your precious career documents have been sucked into a vortex, never to be seen or heard from again. At best, you might get an auto-reply email that acknowledges your application (but promises nothing). Wouldn't it be nice to know what's happening to your resume after you send it? While I was pondering how to approach this topic, AskAManager's Allison Green beat me to the punch. Her recent post, How the Hiring Process Works on the Employer's Side, not only spells out what happens to your resume, it also provides a window into the hiring manager's mind. Be sure to read her whole post, but meanwhile I'll touch onsome of the main points. After your resume leaves your computer, the typical screening/hiring process will go something like this: 1) Applications start pouring in to the employer. Pouring is the operative word. Allison is a hiring manager for a medium-sized non-profit, where they rarely get fewer than 100 resumes for any job posting; 200 to 400 is the norm. (Four hundred!) And these numbers are not unusual. No one can review that many resumes, so the vast majority of them will have to be eliminated. TIP: Don't give them a reasonto eliminate you. 2) Applications get passed to the decision maker(s). Depending on the organization, the initial decision maker might be the hiring manager for the open position, an HR person, or a staff recruiter. Many people use hard-copy printouts of the resumes and cover letters; but larger companies are probably still keeping it electronic at this stage. TIP: Make your resume attractive and organized, with plenty of white space so it's easy to read on screen or on paper. 3) They scan the submissions and eliminate MOST of them. We talk a lot about the 10-second rule (you have only 10 seconds to pique the reader's interest), but Allison is generous. She says her first visual scan of the cover letter and resume lasts at least 45 seconds. At other companies, it might be a computer doing the scan, searching for certain keywords. TIP: Don't apply promiscuously; if you're not qualified (or at least almost qualified), you're wasting your time. 4) They scrutinize the survivors and cut some more. At this point, if you're still in the running, someone will take the time to fully read your cover letter and resume. (Yay!) But in the end, more applicants will be eliminated. (Aww.) The final candidate pool might be as few as 3 or 4 people, or as many as 10 or 15. TIP: Previous steps were all about first impressions; this step looks for substance to support those impressions. Without it, you're gone. 5) They start contacting the remaining candidates. This is where things start to vary from employer to employer. Allison typically asks candidates for a writing sample, a written exercise, or some other relevant material. Other companies (e.g.,) go right to phone interviews, but ask for homework at a later stage. Some go straight to in-person interviews. TIP: If you're asked to do some homework, do it, and follow the instructions to the letter. If you balk, you walk. 6) They conduct phone interviews. The goal of a phone interview is to get a sense of how the candidate communicates, or as Allison puts it, to find out whether or not she's crazy. More people get cut at this point, usually because they have the wrong experience, or commit some behavioral faux pas. TIP: Ifthey call you out of the blue and it's not a good time to talk, don't wing it. Politely ask to reschedule for a time when you can be at your best. 7) They determine finalists and schedule interviews. At this point, the process becomes familiar, because you (the job seeker) are back in the picture. It's the usual sequence of in-person interviews (possibly 2 or 3), thank-you notes (from you to them), reference checks, and eventually when you and an employer find the right fit a job offer, negotiations, a handshake, and a starting date. Now that you've got some insight into what happens on the dark side (wink, wink), I hope it's clear how incredibly important it is to make your resume and cover letter shine with a summary of your specific, relevant qualifications targeted to that employer.
